This picture is painted exclusively in shades of red. Light and dark alternate. The area in cadmium orange, in the center of the left half of the painting, is the most luminous. The dark tones consist largely of superimposed madder glazes. The painting does not depict a concrete object. The blur and cloudy character of the depiction, evoke an intense, warm mood of a sunset. It could reflect a detail, a section of the evening sky, at the end of a hot summer day. Generally, one imagines the sky to be blue, or sometimes gray, especially on rainy days. But skies and clouds can reflect incredible colorfulness, as in this image. The title Evening Red hints at this. The dark spots in the red, but also resemble sunspots, on the visible surface of the sun and would thus be signs of increased solar activity.
Dieses Bild ist ausschließlich in Rottönen gemalt. Hell und Dunkel wechseln sich ab. Am stärksten leuchtet die Fläche in Kadmium Orange, im Zentrum der linken Hälfte des Bildes. Die dunklen Töne bestehen weitgehend aus übereinander gelegten Krapplasuren. Das Gemälde bildet keinen konkreten Gegenstand ab. Die Unschärfe und der wolkige Charakter der Darstellung, erinnern an eine intensive, warme Stimmung eines Sonnenuntergangs. Es könnte einen Ausschnitt wiedergeben, einen Ausschnitt des Abendhimmels, am Ende eines heißen Sommertages. Im Allgemeinen stellt man sich den Himmel blau vor, oder manchmal auch grau, vor allem an Regentagen. Aber Himmel und Wolken können eine unglaubliche Farbigkeit wiederspiegeln, wie in diesem Bild. Der Titel Abendrot deutet darauf hin. Die dunklen Flecken im Rot, gleichen aber auch Sonnenflecken, auf der sichtbaren Oberfläche der Sonne und wären somit Zeichen für eine erhöhte Sonnenaktivität.
