Freezing cold, the ground partly covered with snow. Ice forms on the edge of a river. Where there is no snow but ice has formed, it shimmers darkly. Something shines in a shade that could be described as bottle green. Everything appears quite unobtrusive, the colours almost monochrome. White and many shades of grey cover the ground. This dark patch of bottle green is the only surface with a concrete shape, much darker than its surroundings. This in turn appears dull, lacklustre and almost colourless. There is an icy silence in this picture, which is a detail of a ground structure on the bank of a river. How beautiful a frozen ground can be. With its bizarre forms, created by frost, it inspired the painter. It is a picture that calms, that invites us to linger, to immerse ourselves in silence.
Klirrende Kälte, der Boden zum Teil mit Schnee bedeckt. Am Rande eines Flusses bildet sich Eis. Wo kein Schnee liegt, sich aber Eis gebildet hat, schimmert es dunkel. Da glänzt etwas in einem Farbton, den man als flaschengrün bezeichnen könnte. Alles erscheint ganz unaufdringlich, die Farben fast monochrom. Weiß und viele Grautöne bedecken den Erdboden. Nur dieser dunkle Fleck in Flaschengrün ist die einzige Fläche mit einer konkreten Form, viel dunkler als seine Umgebung. Die wiederum erscheint matt, glanz- und fast farblos. Es herrscht eisige Stille in diesem Bild, das den Ausschnitt einer Bodenstruktur am Ufer eines Flusses darstellt. Wie schön kann ein zugefrorener Erdboden sein. Mit seinen bizarren Formen, geschaffen vom Frost, hat er den Maler inspiriert. Zusehen ist ein Bild, das beruhigt, das auffordert zum Verweilen, zum Eintauchen in die Stille.
