MOHNFELD | POPPY FIELD | 2021 | canvas | 80x60cm | oil, pigments |
Poppy fields are Mahler’s delight. Every year from the end of May, the flowering poppy ushers in early summer as a periodically recurring developmental phenomenon in nature. In the Mysteries of Eleusis, the poppy was a symbol of the earth and of oblivion in honour of the goddess Demeter. If the red of the rose is symbolic of love, here in this painting the colour red appears as a symbol of intoxicating passion.
